What is the VDEI Caption Centre?

The VDEI Caption Centre, initially established as a pilot project by VDEI in 2011, creates captions for educational audio-visual media being used by senior secondary students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The production of captions by the VDEI Caption Centre for audio-visual media where captions are not available ensures students who are deaf or hard of hearing have full access to curriculum materials.

Who can request captioning of audio-visual materials from the Caption Centre?

Educators across Victoria from all sectors: government, independent and Catholic schools can request captioning of audio-visual material for senior secondary students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Captioning requests can be submitted by staff from: schools, specialist settings, deaf facilities and visiting teachers.

What materials can be captioned?

  • DVDs and VHS material that is not available with captions
  • YouTube clips
  • Teacher or school developed material

*Please note: other digital media clips and internet-based files can not currently be captioned by the VDEI Captioning Centre due to copyright laws.

Where is the VDEI Caption Centre?

The VDEI Caption Centre is located at the Bendigo South East 7-10 Secondary College campus of the Bendigo Deaf Facility. The Centre is staffed by two highly skilled captioners.
