DSC_0046 (Mobile).JPGMichelle Baker and Michelle Stark, experienced teachers of the deaf, presented a one day workshop entitled ‘It’s all their hands – supporting signing deaf children to read’ at the Victorian Deaf Education Institute on Saturday 4 May 2013.

This workshop drew on contemporary research and used footage of deaf children reading to demonstrate strategies signing children use when they read.  The presenters also discussed how teachers can exploit sign language to make connections between Auslan and English.

It is pleasing to note that word has spread about these fantastic programs, which are repeats of 2012 programs due to demand VDEI has had from professionals in the field.

These workshops built the knowledge of professionals in Victoria and are prerequisites to workshops that will run later in the year (Sign language narrative and written narrative of signing deaf children – September 2013) and other complementary programs which will be offered in 2014.
