Deaf and hard of hearing people were invited to participate in a day of fun activities at the Werribee Open Range Zoo on Sunday 20 October during National Week of Deaf People. Deaf people were able to access information about the animals through the OpenMi smartphone app and interpreters.
OpenMi Excursions is an app that offers accessible learning through captioned Auslan videos and an audio/captions option. The app can be used on the Pula Reserve Trail and Safari Tour using Quick Response (QR) codes. The kit is available for free hire at the Zoo when school groups visit. Users can read information about the animals and their habitats.
OpenMi Excursions was developed by Australian Communication Exchange in partnership with the Victorian Deaf Education Institute and Werribee Open Range Zoo to help create accessible learning for deaf and hard of hearing students.
