Dear friends and colleagues

As you know, the Minister for Education, James Merlino, is committed to a new high school in Prahran.  The Department has been participating in a closed expression of interest process run by Deaf Children Australia, the owner of the 597 St Kilda Road site.  An agreement could not be reached that would provide value for money and the educational outcomes that the local community deserves.

While the Department is disappointed at this outcome, we look forward to continuing to partner with Deaf Children Australia to explore other ways we can work together to reduce barriers to the participation of children and young people who are deaf or have a hearing loss.

The Department considers that the continued co-location of the Victorian Deaf Education Institute and the Victorian College for the Deaf at the St Kilda Road property has enormous strength and value in the context of our shared objectives with Deaf Children Australia.

Swinburne University of Technology’s former Prahran Campus is now the focus of planning for a new secondary school in Prahran. We have attached a copy of the media release for your information.

The Department of Education and Training Major Project Team has been facilitating this process.   If you would like more information regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Terrie Benfield, Director, Major Projects, Infrastructure and Sustainability Division, on 9651 4733 or by email: Benfield.terrrie.r@edumail.vic.gov.au

Faithfully yours

Dr Jill Duncan
Director
Victorian Deaf Education Institute
