The Victorian Deaf Education Institute will be seeking professionals in Term 1 to join an exciting opportunity for professional development as part of a mentoring program: Peer Observation of Teaching, which will run in Term 2, 2015. A program announcement requesting expressions of interests will go out in Term 1, 2015.
Experiential professional development affords teachers the opportunity to observe, collaborate and reflect on teaching practices that may deepen their understanding and develop their practice and skills. The Victorian Deaf Education Institute is providing the opportunity in the context of a variety of settings for teachers of the deaf to observe teaching practices to enrich their skills and apply to their own educational settings. The project is designed to develop teacher's self-awareness of practice and to strengthen their knowledge and capability in working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
This program has been specifically designed for teachers of the deaf to learn from other professionals working in the Australian deaf education sector.
This program is grounded in the principles of adult learning. Novice and experienced teachers will have an opportunity to see how other professionals in different-but-like settings implement effective teaching strategies with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The program involves attending early intervention or educational settings of peer teachers as observers for five days, and completing required reporting/documenting observations, which will then be compiled into a framework of reflections.
It is expected that participants attend observations in particular settings, and that they engage with the expectations of staff members at those settings, a report will need to be completed and a presentation of observations delivered to VDEI.
All transport and accommodation expenses to observation settings and class relief teaching costs from the participant’s school will be covered for the participants to attend five days at the receiving setting.
A range of interstate settings will be available for peer observation.
