o all teachers and professionals working with students with hearing loss, have you registered for the unmissable evening workshop, ‘Speech production: goal setting and program development’ with Marie Fram scheduled for Thursday 15 May?
Teaching speech production to deaf students is frequently seen as the domain of the speech pathologist, and often the demands of the curriculum take precedence. Yet, a key message from Daniel Ling is that 'practice makes permanent'. When we don't intervene in a meaningful way, we reinforce the permanence of speech production errors in the students we teach. We also become less confident in our practice.
The session will be practical and is intended to support practice. It will provide an opportunity to revisit teaching speech production, to consider how to use assessments to determine goals and how to encourage the generalisation of correct speech sounds into everyday communication.
Marie Fram's career spans many facets of deaf education including classroom teaching and specialist roles in language development, speech production and auditory learning, with particular expertise in developing and implementing curriculum. Marie has worked in schools for the deaf, as a specialist teacher of the deaf and deaf facility coordinator in a mainstream school, as a principal in a Prep to Year 12 school for deaf students, as a lecturer in teacher of the deaf training courses, and as an Auslan interpreter in schools and in the community. Marie has experience in programs employing the auditory oral approach, Cued Speech, Signed English, Auslan and Sign Bilingual programs. Marie and has qualifications in deaf education as a teacher of the deaf, as a languages other than English (LOTE) Auslan teacher and in Auslan interpreting.
The workshop will be held at the Victorian Deaf Education Institute on Thursday 15 May from 5pm to 7pm. Cost is $20 for either face to face or remote access.
