A World Federation of Deaf Youth Section (WFDYS) workshop for deaf and hard of hearing secondary school students was co-hosted by the Victorian Deaf Education Institute (VDEI) and VicDeaf at the VDEI Learning Centre on Friday 11 October 2013.
The workshop was led by Ana Nava Serna from Spain and Jannicke Kvitvaer from Norway, both WFDYS board members. Ana and Jannicke were touring different countries including Australia, speaking to young deaf people about advocacy and rights.
Students who participated were keen to learn about opportunities for young deaf and hard of hearing people overseas as well as how to advocate for their rights locally in Australia. They enjoyed hearing Ana and Jannicke talk about WFDYS and their goals, dreams and working experiences.
Auslan and international sign interpreters were present. Several regional schools made use of VDEI’s video conferencing facility to watch the presentation and participate in group activities with other students at the Learning Centre. Other sponsors of the Victorian visit included Deaf Australia, Deaf Children Australia and Sign Language Communications Victoria.
