After almost five years in the United Kingdom, Adam returned to Australia in 2011 as Director of the National Institute for Deaf Studies and Sign Language at La Trobe University. Since 1993, Adam has worked at a number of institutions as a research assistant/fellow, sessional lecturer, and sign language interpreter, including at the University of Sydney, Macquarie University, and at the Renwick Centre at the University of Newcastle in Australia, as well as the University of Bristol and University College London in the UK.  His research and teaching experience has encompassed a number of areas in sign language linguistics, including work on aspects of the lexicon, grammar and sociolinguistics of Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and British Sign Language (BSL). In 2007, he published an introductory textbook with Cambridge University Press on the linguistics of Auslan entitled Australian Sign Language (Auslan): An introduction to sign language linguistics co-authored with Trevor Johnston.
