Auslan Day on 13 April celebrates Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and its role in the lives of thousands of Deaf Australians.
Auslan Day marks the publication of the first Auslan dictionary, on 13 April 1989.
Auslan has been used in Australia since the 1900s, and there is evidence of signing Deaf people in Australia going back to the 1820s.
Auslan Day honours the rich history, culture and language of the Australian Deaf community, and is a time to recognise the importance of accessible communication for all.
